Debate Speech Outline
        I.            Introduction
A.      “I have a dream that on day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal” Martin Luther King Jr.
B.      Today we have come to debate a very controversial issue, affirmative action. This house of parliament believes in the use of affirmative action in the process of college admissions
C.      After reading several article on the issue of affirmative action, and as a child of history, I feel that I am qualify to debate this issue.
D.      Define affirmative action. Social and economic stratification needs to be address. Changes negative presentation of school, compensate discrimination, racial and cultural diversity in the classroom, provides money for public school.
      II.            Define affirmative action
A.       Affirmative action is using a method to differentiate people groups in order to provide each individual with an equal opportunity and entitlement to higher education.
B.      Vashtic and MIT 
    III.            Social and Economic stratification needs to be address
A.      Two students, different high school, but same qualification. Which one is better for the community? How do you decide which one is better for the community or society itself?
B.      Social stratification: the division of society into groups arranged in a social hierarchy   
C.      The husky promise:  “It's a guarantee to Washington state students from low-income and lower-middle-income families that finances won't keep them from reaching their goals and realizing their potential if they are admitted to the University of Washington”.
    IV.            Method to compensate for NEGATIVE discrimination

Self-Evaluation: Impromptu Speech


 Topic of speech? How did you develop your ideas? What did you do well? What could you do to improve?
The topic of my impromptu speech was favorite vacation. I first picked the vacation I was comfortable sharing with the class, and then created an outline in my head. I used vivid imagery to help the audience shares the experience, I projected my voice, and took necessary pose to allow the audience to react to the information. I could stand more confidently, and avoid leaning on the stand.

1.     What are four forms of public speaking?
a.      The four forms of public speaking are informative—convey knowledge and understanding; commemorative—pays tribute to a person, a group of people, an institution, or an idea; persuasive—the process of creating, reinforcing, or changing people’s beliefs or actions; and entertainment.  
2.     Define the following: rhetoric, audience centeredness, central idea, and specific purpose statement.
a.      Rhetoric is finding all the available means of persuasion.  
b.     Audience centeredness is keeping the audience foremost in mind at every step of the speech preparation and presentation.
c.      Central idea is a one-sentence statement that sums up or encapsulates the major ideas of a speech. 
d.     Specific purpose statement is a single informative phrase that states precisely what the speaker wish to accomplish.  
3.     What are four requirements of an introduction?
a.      The four requirements of an introduction are to get the attention and interest of the audience, reveal the topic of the speech, establish credibility and goodwill, and to preview the body of the speech.
4.     What is the difference between an informative speech and a persuasive speech?
a.      The purpose of a person giving an informative speech is to inform the audience. The informative speaker must be cautious to not take any side, and to provide the information objectively. Unlike the informative speaker, the persuader can be bias and present their position to the audience.
5.     What are three requirements of a conclusion?
a.       The three requirement of a conclusion is for the speaker to signal the end of the speech, reinforce the audience’s understanding of commitment to the central idea, and call the audience to action. 
6.     What percent of meaning is communicated non-verbally?
a.      65% of more of meaning is communicated non-verbally.
7.     Know general characteristics of left and right brain processes.
a.      The general characteristics of left and right brain processes are that the right side of the brain is more analytic, such as that it processes verbal communication as in language, and the left side of the brain is gear more towards processing non-verbal communication.   
8.     List attention-getters for introductions
a.      Relate the topic to the audience
b.     State the importance of the topic
c.      Startle the audience
d.     Arouse the curiosity of the audience
e.      Question the audience
f.       Tell a story

Commemorative Speech
The Father I Never Knew But Hope You Would Be
Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, thank you for coming.
We are here today to say goodbye and to celebrate the life of a son, a brother, a husband, and a father.
My father, Voltaire Apollon, was born in the summer of 1969. His mother thought that he was going to be a girl, so the first clothes he ever worn was a pink onesie. To this day, my aunt does not forget that; she would bring out pictures, though in black in white, to try to explain the story to anyone who dare to ask about her eldest brother. My father was the eldest of five siblings, with only one sister. My mother always jokes that it is his fault that I only have one sister, but have five brothers.
He lived a long, joyful, life. To him, today I say….
Dad, I miss you. I miss you like the earth misses the rain after a dry summer. You have been gone for over ten years now; I want you to know that you are dearly missed. I am sorry it has taking me so long to say goodbye. I wanted to hold on to your compassion, and your love for life.  
I wanted to hold on to your compassion; you left for the war, knowing your chances of coming back was slim to none. I am sorry my seven year old self could not grasp the fact that she may never see her father again.  Your compassion for others has given me the strength to continue without you for the past years. Dad, guess what? I made it through high school. During those years, everywhere I looked you were there with me; through teachers, such as Ms. Reed. Who offered to me her precious time to help me not only learn the new language of this foreign country that I found myself in, but treated me like the precious daughter she never had. She would stay after school with me, long after hours to listen to me read out loud. As I would struggle to sound out foreign words, she would make faces so that my tongue would mimicked her action. After our lessons, she would drop me at home because she did not like the idea of me taking the bus home alone.   You were there with me, because as I crossed the stage to receive my high school diploma, I made eye contact with her across the room; she smiled like the sun shine on the brightest day of the year and mouthed” I am SO proud of you”.  In those moment, I am reminded of your compassion, and I felt your embrace in my heart.  You were there.

I wanted to hold on to your optimistic view on life. Remember your favorite phrase? “Look on the bright side”. To you, every situation has a bright side. As I walked in to the hallway of Guy 300 of Northwest University a year later than I was wanted too, I bumped into someone, a girl named Jenny, we both apologized at the same time, of course. She looked at me and asked, “What room are you in?”, and after that we became friends. Couples of weeks later, as Jenny and I hiked up to Twin Falls, our first hike together, I told her my story.
I was accepted to Northwest University on February of 2011. I attempted suicide on April of 2011 due to being sexually assaulted by someone I cared about. A week later, after the trip from the hospital, I had a meeting with the people in charge of student development at Northwest University. About two weeks later, I received the most devastating news, in my perspective at that time; I received a letter advising that I must deferred my dream of pursuing an education to focus on my wellbeing by going to therapy.
After I was done, telling her my story.  Guess what she says, Dad? “Look at the bright side. We would not have been friends if you had come last year”. “I was still a senior in high school as I recall. What would you have done without me?” She joked.
You were there with as I made the choice to live life abundantly.

Dad, I love and miss you. You will always be with me with every step I take toward a joyful, meaningful, life. You will always, always, be there.

Informative Speech Planning Sheet


        I.            Topic of your speech: Education
      II.            General purpose: informative
   III.            Specific purpose statement: (write this down to make sure that you have thought through our purpose. You do not say this statement in the speech)
a.       My specific purpose is to inform my audience about my experience adjusting to the American secondary education system from the French Education system, and how the French System better prepared for university

Informative Speech Outline



Outline 
        I.            Introduction
A.      About a week ago, I was having lunch in the caf, and someone asked me, “ where are you from”  I said “Haiti”. With confused look on his face, he turned to his right and asked  Yoo Sun, in his native tongue, Korea. Yoo Sun told him Haiti, which is the Korean pronunciation.  With the help of his Iphone, he was able to look it up.
B.      This situation has not been the first for me. Because of that, I committed myself to a week of researched which help me learn more information about Haiti to share with you guys today.
C.      Today, I would to inform you about Haiti; its location and population,  it natural resources, and its education system  
      II.            Location and Population
A.      Haiti is located in western hemisphere, on the continent of North/Central America. Size of Maryland 27 750 sq KM
B.      Population: 9,801,664: Amnesty international  
    III.            Natural resources
A.        According to the World Bank, Haiti is heavily dependent on international aid to feed its people–even at the best of times.
B.      Agriculture: Farming  
    IV.            Education system
    1. French Education System
    2. In Port-au-Prince there is a small university, the State University of Haiti.
      V.            Conclusion
A.      In conclusion, I hope the information you have learn about Haiti—its location, its natural resources, and its attempt at educating the young, will stay with you and that you  will be able to at least point to it for someone else.
