Online Analysis of Two Model Informative Speeches

1.       What is the Central Idea (thesis) for each speech?
a.       The Central idea of the speech The Hidden World of Hot Chili Peppers is the history of chili peppers, why chili peppers are so spicy sometimes, what to do if a bite of chili pepper is supper hot, and other uses of peppers other than food. Meanwhile, the central idea of the speech Medical Robots is medical robots such as orderly robots, remote response robots, and surgical robots.    
2.       How do the speakers catch attention?
a.       The first speaker use the audience’s senses by telling them to imagine with vivid imagery what happen when someone takes a bite of hot Chili peppers. In comparison, the second speaker uses almost the same method by telling the audience about someone having surgery using descriptive imagery. The audiences are able to image each incident.  
3.       How does author of Chili Peppers show credibility?
a.       In the introduction of the speech, the author presented his preference for spicy food as the reason behind his research; he wanted to know more, so he did research. And also, throughout the speech, he revealed his sources.
4.       List the previews for each speech.
a.       “Today I’d like to share with you what I've learned about the history of chili peppers, why they can be so spicy, what to do if you eat a too-hot pepper, and some of the ways peppers are used other than in foods” (Hot Chili Peppers speech).
b.      “We’ll take a look at three kinds of [medical] robots in particular—orderly robots, remote-presence robots, and surgical robots” (Lucas, p.295).  

Evaluative Comments

1.       Choose one of the two speeches. Why do you think that this speech is an effective example of an informative speech?
a.       I think the speech about medical robots is an effective example of an informative speech because it provides the audience with information they might not have known before. The speaker provides a preview to the audience, and sticks with it throughout the speech.  The author also explains the information in human terms that are easy for the audience to grasp. It does e really good using transition from main points to another which makes the point to easy to understand and remember.
     How are these speeches "audience centered"?
             Both speeches are audience centered because both authors throughout the speech involve the audience.  For example, in the introduction of the hot chili pepper speech the author appealed to the senses of each member of audience. Both authors tell the audience to imagine something while using descriptive imagery to help the audience see/feel something in order to fully understand the point(s) the author made.

a.      The ancient Greeks consider public speaking so important because it was the mean through which most people could communicate in the form of the society. For example, when someone was on trial, the person had to give a speech in the court in front of the jury to plead their case. Knowing how to speak eloquently was every important to each citizen in order to survive in that society.

a.      According to the lectures and assigned readings, the organizational patterns for public speeches are chronological, spatial, topical, cause-and-effect, and problem solution

a.      According to the lectures and chapter 14 of our textbook, tips for using presentational aids are: display visual aids only when discussing them, explain visual aids clearly and concisely, take to the audience not the visual aid, practice with the visual aid, and finally check the room and equipment before the day of the presentation.

4.      What are guidelines for ethical speaking? What are guidelines for ethical listening?

a.      The guidelines for ethical speaking are to make sure your goal are ethically sound meaning that you have good intention, honest in what you say, avoid name-calling and other forms of abusive language, and finally put ethical principles into practice. And the guidelines for ethical listening are to listen courteously and attentively, avoid prejudging the speaker, and maintain the free and open expression of ideas.

5.      What are ways to become a better listener according to chapter 3?

a.      According to chapter 3 of our textbook, some ways to become a better listener are to take listening seriously, be an active listener, resist distractions, try not to be diverted by appearance and delivery, focus your listening, and to develop not-taking skills.

6.      What are tips for organizing the first speech according to chapter four?

a.      According to chapter 4 of our textbook, chronological order and topical order are tips for organizing the first speech for they allow to create a sandwich-like outline with an intro that preview the body and the conclusion that review the central idea.

7.      What are tips for formulating the specific purpose statement?

a.      Write the specific purpose statement as a full infinitive phrase

b.      Express your purpose as a statement not a question

c.       Limit the purpose statement to one distinct idea

d.      Make sure the specific purpose is not too vague or general

a.       I have a heart for Immigrant. My experience as one has equipped me with the tools needed to serve them. 

REFLECTION 

2) What surprised you about the presentation and 5) what could you do to improve time you speak?

·         The thing that surprises me most about my presentation is that it was so much easier than I had imagined. I had nightmare about different scenarios of what would happen, but I am really happy none of them were close to what actually happened. Even though I am happy about my performance, there’s still room for improvement for my next speech. For next time, I will need to project my voice better, so that it would reach the back of the room. I will try to be more audience oriented. For example, in my speech today, I should have connected the audience with the story of the book of Acts by reminding them that each individual has a role in the community. It is safe to say that every speech will help me become a better speaker.
